Permaculture
While volunteering in both Thailand and Laos, I had the opportunity to assist with permaculture projects that consisted of aiding with the planting of seeds and crops, tilling soil, and creating sustainable farming techniques for local villages to use to support themselves in the future.
While working on the farms and in the fields, it showed me a whole new world that I knew existed, but had never experienced or immersed myself in. Being from the panhandle of Florida, I have seen plenty of farms, but know can compare to the ones I worked in while in Asia. Almost every farm is made without any modern technology, they are all mostly made and planted by hand. Getting to experience something like this was very special.
By working in these farms, I feel that I have developed some skills not only in the sense that I can farm now, but also in some mental aspects as well. For example, some days were very hot and long, this developed my discipline, patience, and perseverance as I know that if I help finish planting, it could effect a whole village of people. This could be important in my future as I hope to become a physical therapist, where you must be patient and trust the process of recovery with your patient.
